Breathing 100% oxygen at increased atmospheric pressure is a painless, proven way to help the body heal. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers work by surrounding the patient with 100 % oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in sessions. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient's blood allowing red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wounds to heal them from the inside out.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a specialized treatment for Union Hospital Wound Healing Center patients with the most severe wounds. Patients are placed in the hyperbaric chamber 5 days a week, usually for 30 to 40 minute each day, during which they can relax and view television programming through the see-through acrylic chamber. The results of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are seen in the patient restored function, usually returning to their pre-wound status.
