Quit Partner

When it comes down to it, all successful smokers become smoke free on their own. It can though be helpful to have support from others during difficult times. There are a couple of options for a Quit Partner.

Co-Quitter

Someone else who wants to quit smoking. This does not have to be a family member. This could be a co-worker or friend. This co-quitter doesn't have to be someone with the same packs per day, years in, or quit techniques. This just needs to be someone with the same goal in mind!

Together you can compare notes, give support, and offer tips on what techniques have worked for each individual. This is also someone who will understand your frustration and who will be experiencing similar feelings as you.

Quit-Support

An ex-smoker is a perfect choice for interpersonal support. Ex-smokers are most often very eager to share their success stories to encourage you on your own journey. An ex-smoker will be open to hearing your good and bad times because they have been there themselves. The quit support will be constructive and motivational.

Four ways to identify a strong and constructive support person.

1. Will not encourage you to take the easy way out and have a cigarette when the going gets tough. They will instead encourage you to persevere

2. Will not call attention to any increased anger or irritability

3. Will not relate to your quit attempt in a competitive manner

4. Will not criticize you if you slip and have a cigarette, but will encourage you to get on track
