Approximately 30-50% of women and 15-30% of men will suffer a fracture related to osteoporosis in their lifetime. Bone Density tests work by identifying those at risk so treatment can begin before their condition results in a painful and debilitating fracture. A Bone Density Scan is a non-invasive, 15-minute test. Those who should consider having this screening exam done are all women age 65 and older, younger postmenopausal women with one or more risk factors, and individuals receiving, or planning to receive, long-term steroid therapy.
A DEXA bone density scan is an imaging test that measures bone density (the amount of bone mineral contained in a certain volume of bone) by passing x-rays with two different energy levels through the bone. It is used to diagnose osteoporosis (decrease in bone mass and density). Also called BMD scan, bone mineral density scan, DEXA, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometric scan, dual x-ray absorptiometry, and DXA.
