Ultrasound (sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves above the range of human hearing to produce images of a body part on a computer screen. There is no radiation involved and ultrasounds are safe to have performed. Ultrasound may also be used to image structures that do not move or to guide needle biopsies in order to obtain tissue samples to be analyzed by a pathologist.
During an ultrasound exam, the ultrasound tech will use a transducer in the area that is being imaged to obtain images to be read by the radiologist. The ultrasound tech will apply a liquid gel to your skin or to the transducer to help the transducer move smoothly to help with the transmission of the sound waves to obtain the best images possible for your exam. The radiologist will review the images obtained by your ultrasound technologist and dictate a report that will be sent to your healthcare provider.
